Endangered Species
Painting endangered species has become a consistent subject for my work. As we have now entered what scientists are calling Earth’s sixth major extinction. Most experts agree that human activities have accelerated the rate of species extinction - somewhere between 100 and 1000 times the normal rate of extinction.
While I have been painting endangered species on and off throughout my career, one month in 2018, I made it my goal to paint 30 endangered species in 30 days. This series bleeds into many of my other bodies of work like my animal statuettes some of which are wrapped in money because those animals are killed by hunters to be sold, the animals like the Hine’s Emerald Dragonfly that’s endangered and depicted in my seascapes, and even the flowers that I choose to paint (such as the endangered American Lotus flower shown near the bottom of this page).
This series has also been used as a study for my larger piece about climate change, which includes more than 40 endangered animals in the painting. Learn more about Lady Earth here.
